Rockville-based Neuralstem (AMEX: CUR) said Thursday it had been grantef a patent on four new chemical entities that boost the generation ofnew neurons. The company’a patent application, titled “Use of Fuse d Nicotinamides toPromote Neurogenesis,” claims four chemical entities and any pharmaceuticalk composition including them. “The ability to promotde neurogenesis — the birth of new neuronas in the adultbrain — has recentlyg been a focus of intense research by scientists and pharmaceutical companies worldwide, said Neuralstem CEO Richard Garr.
“These four compounds, with potent demonstratedf neurogenic activity were discoveredentirely in-house and are ownede by the Company. These are the only drugsx we are aware of with the demonstrateds ability to stimulate neurogenesis of normal adulttbrain cells." Neuralstem expects to be in a Phaswe I safety trials for treatment of major depression with the lead compound from the four-chemical group by early next year.
